Michael Bulmer was born in 1931 in Birmingham, England and was educated at Rugby School and Oxford University. He has a B.A. in Animal Physiology, a Diploma in Applied Statistics, a D.Phil in statistics and a D.Sc., all from Oxford University. He was Lecturer in Medical Statistics at Manchester University (1957–59), Lecturer in Biomathematics at Oxford University (1959–91) and Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, Rutgers University, New Jersey (1991-95). He is an Emeritus Fellow of Wolfson College, Oxford and a Fellow of the Royal Society of London. He has written five books and about one hundred papers on the application of statistics and mathematics to population biology and evolution. He lives near the north coast of Norfolk, England.
